I just got home from GDC 2024
Ultimately, it was not as weird as many folks were suspecting it'd be with so many layoffs. I wonder if the folks who were laid off just didn't come. (That's probably a likely answer.)
I was really surprised to see that there was a single Games for Kids talk at the entire conference. Shocking! Kids are such a huge group of game players and there's an art to making games they can comfortably play... Needless to say, I really enjoyed that talk.
I focused on talking to people one on one and going to smaller events... and I think I preferred that over any of the huge talks or events! It was great getting to see people who I work with remotely in person and seeing folks a couple days at a time throughout the week.
I'm very energized from this year. Which is interesting, since I was toying with the idea of not going and/or having this be my last year... If I can keep making it out there affordably, I may stick with it even longer.
